Chiropractors focus on realigning the spine, which in turn can have a whole host of knock on effects for the body and improve health and mobility across the board. The aim here is to improve alignment of the entire body and this begins with the spine.
That means that essentially, a chiropractor can treat a large number of ailments, including nearly anything that a physiotherapist might focus on, as well as a lot of other issues such as headaches, muscle pain, and weakness.
What’s key to remember is that all the nerves in the central nervous system run through the spine and that means that any misalignment can result in pain at any part of the body.
Likewise, manipulation may be intended to restore the structural integrity of the spine and to reduce pressure on sensitive tissues.
Using these techniques, a chiropractor can treat a number of different conditions. You should consider seeing a chiropractor if you suffer from:
Of course, the specific treatment used, the length of the treatment and the eventual success will all depend on the type of injury.
Not all solutions offered by a chiropractor will involve manipulation of the spine. Chiropractors can also work directly on any other area, but simply view the body in a cohesive and holistic manner.
So how might a chiropractor treat something that isn’t specifically related to the spine?
Knee pain is a good example. Here, it is often possible that the source of knee pain is actually caused by issues with the spine. Pain can be referred for instance if the back is out of alignment and is pressing on nerves connected to the legs. Likewise, if the posture is incorrect, this can then cause imbalances which result in extra pressure being exerted on the joint leading to more pain and more long-term damage.
If the pain isn’t caused by the back, then a chiropractor will look into other solutions. They might help to identify issues with other joints in the leg, or imbalances in the muscle that might be placing uneven strain on the knee joints. Likewise, they can use a number of specific manipulation techniques targeting the knee specifically in order to normalize function of the joint.
A rehabilitation program may also be introduced in order to improve strength and flexibility through gentle exercise and self-manipulation.
