Toxic Release Chiropractic Adjustment

Toxic Release Chiropractic Adjustment

When visiting your Omaha, or Papillion chiropractor, especially if it is your first time, you may experience slight cold or flu-like symptoms after your visit. No, this is not due to the clinic being unhygienic, or from the chiropractic work itself, but from something called toxic relief.

Toxic Release Chiropractic Adjustment

Receiving regular chiropractic adjustments improves your overall health and wellness and many of our patients report feelings of improvement in just one visit. There is sometimes an adjustment period for those new to chiropractic, and you may experience a few days of toxic release after your first adjustment. But what exactly is toxic release?

What is Toxic Release?

Up to 20 percent of patients experience this condition after receiving chiropractic adjustments, and although it sounds scary, it is actually a positive reaction. When undergoing chiropractic manipulations, the toxins in your body are being released, which is positive for the body and makes it healthier and stronger. Unfortunately, the expelling of these toxins can cause some temporary unpleasant symptoms. Just know that it is only your body adjusting to the expulsion of all negative energy, and the symptoms will soon pass.

Why does Toxic Release after Chiropractic Adjustment Happen?

As manipulations are made in the joints and spine, there can sometimes be a negative reaction (toxic release). Chiropractic clears out negative subluxations and interferences in the spine. As your body adjusts to those dysfunctions being treated, it takes a short period of time to process its improved spinal function. Toxic release is sometimes just part of that adjustment process.

Common Symptoms

Some of the symptoms you may experience if your body does go through
toxic release are:

  • Cold- or flu-like symptoms
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Tight muscles
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea

Feeling particularly tired after a chiropractic session is very common. This is due to your body adjusting to the new way your nervous system is reacting to the treatment. Before having your adjustment, it is likely that your nervous system was being jammed up in some areas by subluxations. However, through chiropractic manipulations (adjustments), your nerves will be able to work at their optimal level, which can be exceptionally tiring to the body if it has been deprived of full functionality for some time.

How to manage it?

To manage negative symptoms of toxic release, we recommend that you:

  • Drink Plenty of Water – Hydration is key for the body to function as it should and for getting rid of toxins. Be sure to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
  • Get Some Rest – A good night’s sleep is always important, but especially so after an adjustment. If you experience toxic release symptoms, get plenty of restful sleep for the next few days to help the symptoms run their course.
  • Exercise Regularly – You may feel tired, but light exercise like yoga and walking can improve how you feel.
  • Eat Healthy – You know nutrition is important for a healthy body, but after an adjustment avoid processed foods and try to eat meals rich in fruits and vegetables.
